The
Winery
The farm extends over an area of about 150 hectares (375 acres),
55 hectares (137.5 acres) of which are covered by vineyards and
11 hectares (27 acres) of olive groves. Continuous qualitative
improvements in production, buildings, and machinery have always
been and remain a driving force behind Villa Branca. Despite the
many new initiatives being offered at the estate, the wine production
is still the principal activity and focus of research in quality,
in varietal selection in the vineyards, and in improvements in
cellar techniques.
The dominating varietal in the vineyards is Sangiovese, which
is accompanied by some international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot e Petit Verdot.
The 14th century cellars have adopted many new techniques
and have expanded the area reserved for aging wines in barriques,
greatly improving the vinification process and the maturation
of the wine while respecting local tradition.
Current wine production is about 120,000 bottles. This number
will increase slightly as the 25 hectares (62 acres) of recently
re-planted vineyards returns to full production in accordance
with the most up-to-date viticulture techniques.
Villa Branca also has a small production of Vin Santo and
excellent Extra Virgin Olive oil D.O.P. (the new highest rating
in olive oils). The oil is obtained from olives gathered and
pressed in the farm's own olive press, which uses traditional
stone wheels, for a total of about 2,600 bottles.

The care of the vineyards and the vinification process are
in the hands
of an expert agronomist and a top enologist, who are supported
by the daily presence of a technical director and an experienced
cellar manager.
On another positive note, the relationship between the staff
of the farm and the owners represents a uniquely positive rapport:
the staff is comprised of local families who have lived and
worked here for generations. It is a detail that makes the
Branca family very proud and deepens their attachment to this
enchanting land.
